Falcons In A Fog

Atlanta 7 at New England 23

October 22, 2017

By:  Allison Smith

And I don’t just mean the weather.  It seems that after the first New England score, the fireworks went up, and the fog came down.  From that point on, it was clear that the fog set in on the Falcons as well, taking over 90 minutes to score points from the previous game to just over 5 minutes left in this one.

The game started well enough.  The Falcons won the coin toss, deferred to the second half, and put their fast and physical defense on the field.  The Patriots had a 5-minute, 9 play drive that resulted in a forced punt short of midfield.  At this point, Deion Jones and Keanu Neal both were already amassing tackles and making their presence known.  Then, the Falcons offense came out….and….went 3 and out.  Again.  Then Matt Bosher comes out to punt.  Short.  Again.  Not to be a Negative Nelly, but this is likely when Falcon fans should have turned off the game and gone to bed.  We all know, they were going to refer to the Super Bowl 200+ times, so at best, we would be tortured to the end of the game, win or lose.

102217 DeVondre Campbell Sack
De’Vondre Campbell’s Sack of Tom Brady – Atlanta Falcons

On the second Patriot possession, the first play, Tom Brady drops back and is immediately sacked by De’Vondre Campbell.  So, you start to think this may go well.  On 2nd and 17, Brady goes deep to Rob Gronkowski, who is called for offensive pass interference.  Suddenly, a couple plays later, the Patriots are punting again.

While everything is still looking positive, the Falcons take the field again.  Ryan fakes to Tevin Coleman, bootlegs to Julio Jones, who has a stretch run, gaining 16 yards.  Devonta Freeman and Coleman are sharing the load already.  On a 4th and 7 near midfield, Ryan drops back and looks, then takes off running to the right and gains the first down.  After a short Freeman run, have a play action pass to Mohammed Sanu for 19 yards over the middle.  A few plays later after a pass to Andre Roberts is knocked incomplete, Matt Bryant comes on to kick a 37-yard field goal….and Cassius Marsh comes between the left guard and tackle and blocks the attempt.  This is for sure your sign.  Good news, Ben Garland is in for special teams and ended the play after the Patriots recovered the blocked kick.

Again, first play of the Patriots drive is met with a sack.  This one, after a nice spin move by Vic Beasley, Jr., giving him his 3rd sack of the season.  Desmond Trufant stuffs the run, and the first quarter ends in a 0/0 tie.

On 3rd and 11, the offense draws Brian Poole and a speeding Grady Jarrett into the backfield, now on 3rd and 16, Brady finds Chris Hogan for 20 yards downfield.  And this is how the rest of the game would go.  Atlanta NOT converting on third downs, while New England had big gains on third downs.  Brady has a pass intercepted by Robert Alford in the end zone, it is nullified by a roughing the passer penalty (similar to last week, not a late hit, but head to head hit) by Adrian Clayborn.  On the sideline, Head Coach Dan Quinn asked what they called, and it seemed Claybo was confused on when you can still hit the quarterback, not realizing out of the pocket, he was still seen as a quarterback and could not be touched.  Now at the Atlanta 16, two plays later, the Patriots score the first touchdown of the game.

The Falcon offense comes back out aggressive.  Ryan fakes it to Freeman and throws a bomb to Julio, but his feet are tangled with the defender and it’s second down.  A pass behind the line to Taylor Gabriel, then hit a defender in the helmet, and Bosher is back on for a 49-yarder, where Justin Hardy hits the punt returner immediately.

The Patriots continue their drive, and again the Clemson tandem of Jarrett and Beasley combine for stop.  On the 2nd down, Beasley applies the pressure and causes a 1-yard pass play that Jarrett ends with a solo tackle.  Then Neal, watching Brady’s eyes, has a perfect pass knockdown in the end zone, causing a New England field goal.

With under 5 minutes until the half, the Falcons start their comeback drive.  Freeman has a nice 11-yard crossing the field gain, gives a little juke and has a great cutback, and then his speed kicks in.  The offense goes no huddle, 13 yards to Sanu, a 6-yard run by Freeman is called back with offsetting penalties, then the single target to Coleman is incomplete, and Ryan is sacked.  With 3rd and 20, Julio Jones catches a 14-yard pass for his 8007th receiving yard (2nd fastest to 8000 yards).  Sadly, the Falcons needed 20 yards, but with 4th and 6 to go, again, at midfield, the offense stays on the field.  A Ryan overthrow of Sanu gives the Patriots great field position with almost 2 minutes to go.  Seven plays later, the Patriots have their second touchdown of the game and take a 17/0 lead into the half.  The Falcons did have 3 offensive plays, but not enough to get far enough down the field for even a Bryant field goal attempt.

The Falcons received the ball in the 3rd quarter, marched pretty well down the field until being stopped at the 17 (just inside the red zone) and then had Bryant hit the goal post on the 37-yard field goal attempt.

Once again, Brady and team march down the field, passing to Hogan, running behind Dion Lewis, and with a 1st and goal, the defense stands up, allowing the Patriots down to the 1, where Beasley and Kemal Ishmael combine to push Mike Gillislee back to the 3, forcing another field goal.

With a heavy dose of Freeman (who in his 3rd game that I have notice running really angry), and some help from Jones, the Falcons move down the field.  On 2nd and goal, Sanu makes an awesome catch with double coverage and lands just outside of the end zone, 10 inches to be exact.  Then, instead of Freeman or Coleman up the middle, or even Dontari Poe passing the ball, or a Sanu 12 Gauge, Ryan throws low to Jones allowing Malcolm Butler to make a good play on the ball.  Then on a jet sweep to Gabriel, he loses 5 yards.  This playing in completely questionable, but also, the execution was poor, with the blockers for Gabriel being easily taken down.

With an entire quarter to play, you can already feel the stake to the heart.  The Pats drive down to the 20, where Poole makes the stop causing 4th down and the final field goal of the day.  With over 9 minutes remaining, the Falcons use over half of that time, and over 90 minutes since their last score, to finally find Julio Jones in the end zone.  Naturally, Ju makes a miraculous catch, snatching the ball out of the air and away from defenders.

102217 Julio Touchdown
Julio Jones Snatching The Ball Out of the Air – Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta has an onside kick, recovered by the Patriots, who graciously only drove to the 17 where they took a knee from the 2-minute warning to the end.

Once again, there has been no offensive rhythm.  If Freeman has a few good runs, they pull him out and put in Coleman.  While I think they are both awesome running backs, and have crazy numbers, running in tandem, the team needs to pick a starter.  Let Freeman, the highest paid RB in the league, earn his money.  Let him tell you when he is ready for a break.  Use Julio Jones….MORE.  Make 3rd downs shorter.  The first half were 3rd and 11, 8, and 2.  Second half had 3rd and 16, 1, 8, and 9.  Successfully on 2 of 9.  Then, of course the famous 4th and 6 and 7s.

Freeman and Coleman combined for 88 yards.  Julio was a yard short of 100.  Sanu, welcomed back from his hamstring injury, was on fire with 65 yards, while others had 1 or 2 catches only.  Once again, the defense was on the field too long, but does allow them to run up stats.  Poe and Jarrett were both on the field for 77 snaps, Beasley for 47, Brooks Reed 45.  Campbell led the team in tackles with 8 total and the forced fumble on the sack.  Ishmael, who came in when Duke Riley went out injured, quickly amassed 9 total tackles, with Jones and Neal just behind with 11 and 10 combined.  The Clemson boys had 5 a piece, and of course, Beasley’s sack.

Overall, this game was a complete suck.  Even without the Super Bowl revenge, which clearly the team was not buying into, you would have thought they would have put on a better show.  Now, we watch, and wait.  See what the 3 game road trip holds.  They head up to the 3 – 4 Jets, who just got beat by Miami earlier in the day.  Then, to Carolina…which at least will be a home game for me, and many, many Falcon fans will make the 85 North trek.  Hopefully, the fog will be lifted by next Sunday.

Injury Update:  Deion Jones was dinged up, but returned to the game.  Duke Riley is having knee surgery and expected to be out at least 4 weeks.

Due to the Riley injury, Sean Weatherspoon is back, bringing a veteran presence and some spunk back to the locker room.  Let’s home this helps.

Iron Falcon:  If one can continue to be awarded on such a bad loss.  De’Vondre Campbell.  He tried to set the tone early with a big sack and pressuring Brady all day.  Julio Jones, for always being unselfish, getting to over 8000 receiving yards, nearly 100 yards on the day, and his first touchdown of the season, and not even caring because it was in a losing effort.

And Then There Was One

Atlanta 30 at Detroit 26

September 24, 2017

By: Allison Smith

Alone at the top, as the only NFC team to be undefeated.  After only 3 weeks into the NFL season, the other 2 undefeated teams lost today.  The Carolina Panthers to the New Orleans Saints, and the Detroit Lions to our beloved Atlanta Falcons…..I think.

As Matt Bryant said, we don’t usually have to ask at the end of the game, “Did we win?” But, in likely one of the strangest endings in history – or at least a long time, the Falcons did move to 3-0 in Detroit.  Once again, using the full 60 minutes to determine the result.  I was at a local sports bar in Charlotte, and several of us Falcons were gathered and determined that this drama was not necessary.  But, we will take a win, by hook or crook.

On the positive note, even with 3 turnovers, the Falcons still won.  Two of Matt Ryan’s passes were tipped by his intended targets (Tevin Coleman and Mohamed Sanu, Sr.), for interceptions.  The Lions were only able to come away with 3 points from those two.  The third, was a pick 6, by Glover Quin, who read Ryan’s eyes perfectly and stepped in front of Julio Jones for the pick.  The defense did their job as brothers to help the offense out.

The game started off well enough, Owner Arthur Blank on the field, linking arms with the team, between Devonta Freeman and Julio Jones.  We received the opening kickoff and marched down the field in 12 plays and just under 7 minutes to take the opening lead on a Sanu touchdown.  Unfortunately, it was questionable and while being reviewed, we were unable to get a Bean Dance.

After an 8 play drive, the Lions punted it back to the Falcons and Andre Roberts made an 11-yard return.  The next drive included 2 false starts and a sack and ended in a Bryant field goal.  The Lions answered with a field goal of their own, to get on the board at 10/3 with 10 minutes left in the half.  Then, it became the Free Show.  Two of the next 6 plays were to Freeman, then 4 straight handoffs to Freeman, concluding with his 1-yard touchdown run.  And this was not even Free running angry as he did later in the game.

The next Lions drive stalled and they were only able to manage another field goal.  But their D stepped up and on the Falcons next drive, next play, Quin had his pick 6.

Overall, short of turnovers, the offense looked good.  Free was just Free.  Julio had 7 receptions for 91 yards on the day.  Taylor Gabriel and Sanu finally had touchdown catches, 40 and 4 yards respectively.  Ryan disturbed the ball to 7 receivers, Roberts and Austin Hooper catching one a piece, for 12 and 9 yards.  Ryan threw for almost 300 yards on the day.

The defense had a pretty successful day, realizing one touchdown was not on them and when their backs were against the wall, they stood up and held the line.  The Lions were 4 for 4 scoring touchdowns in the red zone…until they weren’t.  There were a number of missed tackles again and playing more zone than man to man.  Takk McKinley had his first sack of his young NFL career and celebrated by pointing and dedicated it to his grandmother then had 2 more tackles on the day.  After the game, Takk said that he just did whatever the coaches wanted him to do.  He wants more sacks, but it way more about the Brotherhood.

Adrian Clayborn had another good game, one sack, but putting lots of pressure on the line and Matt StaffordGrady Jarrett got in on the official stats this week with 4 tackles and caused at least 2 offensive holding penalties.  To prove his persistence, at one point, Jarrett had a leg tackle to slow the runner down, another Falcon came in for help, Jarrett got back to his feet and made the crushing tackle.

Deion Jones had an early personal foul penalty, then followed it up with back to back tackles, ending the game with 7 in total.  Brian Poole lead the team with 9 tackles, making his hits known too.  De’Vondre Campbell was disruptive again and garnered 3 tackles, while Robert Alford had 6 tackles this week and good coverage most of the day.

Special teams…wow…much improved.  Matt Bosher was perfect, of course.  All except 1 kickoff was a touchback, while he had a 43 and 48-yard punt with one 10-yard return.  Bryant had successful field goals of 36, 48, and 40 yards.  Roberts had returns of 11, 38, 27, and 16 yards and called for a quick fair catch, was hit and got the team moved up 15 yards.

Overall, there were too many penalties, especially in the final drive of the game, giving up too many free yards.  Two sacks were allowed by the new right side combo of Wes Schweitzer and Ty Sambrailo.  Both had false starts and Schweitzer added a holding penalty.  Ben Garland anyone???  While Desmond Trufant had 2 tackles on the day, those were early, but he also committed 2 late penalties.  On the final drive of the game, Tru had an unnecessary hold that overturned a Rocky interception at the goal line, then a pass interference penalty on a 3rd and 10 that gave the Lions a 1st and 10 on the 1-yard line.

Special note, for my loyal readers from my previous seasons, you know Paul Worrilow has been my favorite Falcon for the last 4 years, so I was watching Paul this week as well.  He had 4 tackles, the first tackle of the game, on Freeman, and not long afterwards tackled Julio.  He was also one of the guys in pursuit of Turbo on his touchdown, which we all know would be impossible for anyone to cover.  Congrats and good game.

Injury Update:  Ricardo Allen is undergoing concussion protocol due to a tackle late in the fourth quarter.  Rico did leave the field with assistance, but walked to the locker room on his own.  Julio Jones jammed his back on the final offensive play of the game, gaining 11 of the 12 needed yards.  Julio will flipped, but afterwards he and Dan Quinn reported the injury not to be serious.  Julio said he would have gone back in if that was not the final offensive possession.

Iron Falcon Award:  Brian Poole – leading tackler for the game, on a Stafford run, Poole seemed to let up slightly, waiting for Stafford to slide, which he did not, so Poole laid him out.  Poole also ended the game with the touchdown saving tackle.  Devonta Freeman – time and time again, Free had 3 back to back runs, ran angry, ran fast, blocked for teammates, ended with 21 rushes for 103 yards and a long 18-yard run, and 3 receptions for 32 yards.  Free even tried to fight when Julio was hurt.

090217:  And Then There Were 53

So, apparently there was some big secret going on at The Branch today as 4pm came and went and it was after 5pm ET before we got the Final Falcons Roster.  I didn’t see any huge surprises, especially on the release list.  Several lists with, waived for this and that, injured, suspended, etc.  Jalen Collins is still on the team, al biet suspended for 10 games, but that gives us a buffer for later in the season.  Another surprise, maybe only to me, was Ra’Shede Hageman.  He is on the commissioner’s exempt list.  Which is, I just learned, a holding pattern.  Shede’s domestic abuse charge from August of 2016 was wrapped in the courts, but continues to be reviewed in the league.  So, Shede is on the team, but can’t play right now….don’t get me started on this.

Congrats to everyone that made the team.  I will mark up my roster from earlier in the week, as I think it is going to be pretty close – short of the traded additions I didn’t anticipate.  Of note, RB Brian Hill made the roster, WRs Andre Roberts and Nick Williams, BEN GARLAND is the starting RG!!!  LBs include LaRoy Reynolds and undrafted rookie Jermaine Grace that earned his spot in Thursday’s game for sure.  Another guy that solidified his spot Thursday was Blidi Wreh-Wilson at CB.

Andre Roberts is the official returner for now, and I am sure he will get some help from Justin Hardy and Nick Williams along the way.

Practice squad will be announced later, so see who earns a spot there.

Below is the current roster.  Again, congrats to everyone…new and old….welcome to The Brotherhood.

That Defense Though…..

Jacksonville 13 at Atlanta 7
August 31, 2017
Allison Smith

So, clearly our defense is not going to be our trouble this year.  With many of the first teamers not playing at all in Game 4 of the Preseason, the guys that did play, were fighting hard to earn their spot on this roster.  Last week we had “Fumble Central,” this week was an “Interception Clinic.”  The back-up Falcons defense had 3 interceptions in the first half alone.  Blidi Wren-Wilson and Sharrod Neasman, tipped by Chris Odom, both had interceptions in the end zone to stop Jacksonville drives.  Jermaine Grace hauled in an interception as well and has played with good speed and has really been showing some good skills.

Noting that neither Matt Ryan nor Matt Schaub stepped foot on the field, the offense had another rough night.  After a quick 3 and out, Jacksonville was able to score quickly with a 43-yard pass for a touchdown.  Matt Simms was sacked twice in a single drive and Alex Torgersen threw an interception and was sacked late in the game.  Meanwhile, Matt Bosher had 6 punts, averaging 43 yards.

083117 Chris Odom Sack

Chris Odom Sack     Photo Courtesy:  Atlanta Falcons

The defense caused many long field goals and punts for Jacksonville.  Lots of speed, energy, and effort by the young guys Thursday night.  Odom finished with 6 tackles, an assist, a sack, a quarterback hurry, a tackle for loss, and may have played himself into a coveted roster position.

A few offensive stand outs were Deante Burton with 2 catches for 44 yards, Marvin Hall with a 65-yard gain.  Kelvin Taylor had a nice 24-yard catch from Simms early in the game, and Darion Griswold recovered a fumble for a touchdown, then later had a 51-yard catch from Alex Torgersen.  Overall, Sims showed himself well in all the preseason games.  So, all is not lost, even for our 3rd to 4th string team.

Reggie Davis returned one kickoff 22 yards, while Hall had an 8-yard punt return.  Punt coverage for the Falcons was better, or Bosher’s kicks were just too good.  But the kickoff coverage allowed 20 and 21 yard returns.

In the grand scheme, game 4 was pure evaluation for the bubble and not-even bubble guys.  We came out of training camp and preseason with no injuries (Devonta Freeman was fully dressed Thursday).  Head Coach Dan Quinn noted that he and Thomas Dimitroff have “Difficult decisions ahead regarding the roster.”  DQ said it will be a difficult, but exciting weekend ahead.  They both are really happy with the new rule to have a full roster through the end of preseason, to give more guys more chances to make a roster or show off their skills for other teams.

As for the most heated competition of the preseason…..Ben Garland and Wes Schweitzer at right guard, DQ commented that “both played at center and guard…pretty much have decision down…could see both playing,” which is what Allison said weeks ago….It will be interesting to see if Coach names a starter or just release the roster or cut list.

While we may not be winning in preseason, we have seen good speed on all 3 phases of the game, lots of team play, effort, and learning.

So now, we wait.

FalconAlley Falcons

8pm – August 29

This is my roster, very close to the 53 and without practice squad.  I know I have too many WR, but assumption is Nick Williams and Andre Roberts are more ST until they can move themselves up.  And realize, the defensive guys are listed at X position, but many of them play a couple of different positions in Dan Quinn’s scheme.

I am picking Ben Garland as MY starting right guard, but keeping Wes Schweitzer on the roster.  I am sure I am off on the O line side, but we may also pick someone up after the cuts.

I think we will keep Jalen Collins on the team for now.  He will not cost money or a roster spot and think we will have someone watch over him (even secretly – not sure the exact rules on suspension) and see if he is in ballgame shape and our roster status by week 11.
